In 2000 BC, in Canaan, God called Abraham to sacrifice his son Isaac as a burnt offering on Mount Moriah. Abraham took two of his servants, Kelzar, the son of the butler Eliezer of Damascus, and Eshcolam, a Pelishtiy, with him and Isaac.
Forty years earlier, in 2,040 BCE, Abraham - then as Abraham - told his wife Sarah - then as Sarah - that he saw the Lord God, who commanded him to go to a land that the Lord God would show him and promise him, a great nation, leaving his home, Ur of the Chaldees.
On the way to Hebron, the group met some Pelishtiy guards from Abimelech, king of Pelesheth. The Pelishtiyites left the group alone after Abraham revealed himself as Abraham, who knew King Abimelech.
In the camp, Abraham recounted the events of how he led his shepherds to defeat the kings of Shinar in the east, rescuing captives including Abraham's family. Abraham also discussed the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah due to wickedness with his group.
Along the way, Abraham recalled God's promise of land and descendants and how Sarah advised Abraham to go to Egypt during a famine. Approaching Hebron, Abraham remembered God's covenant with him about a son as an heir. Abraham recalled how he told Sarah God's covenant with him, which led to Abraham sleeping with Sarah's maid in Egypt, Hagar, to bear a child at Sarah's request and Hagar being pregnant then giving birth to Ishmael, Abraham's firstborn son, in Hebron, creating strife between Abraham, Sarah, and Hagar.
At night, after discussing the symbol of sacrifice; God's holiness; being blind to sin; faith; his experience of God; capital punishment; and God's mind, ways, thoughts, and purposes with the group, Abraham bargained with God to take his life instead of Isaac's life.
Entering Ephrathah, Abraham recounted the Pelishtiyites who brought Sarah into King Abimelech's harem and how God wreaked havoc on both Abimelech's house and people, thus returning Sarah to Abraham and rewarding him with wealth and servants. Following Eshcolam's hostility towards Abraham and Kelzar's intervention, the group again faced Pelishtiy's guards, who demanded tithes and then abandoned them, injuring Abraham and Isaac. In the field, Abraham recalls his encounter with the three visitors and God renames Abram to Abraham and Sarai to Sarah, promising him a child named Isaac.
