Childs Play Movie: The Story of a Doll Possessed by a Cursed Soul

Child's Play is a 1988 American slasher film directed by Tom Holland, from a script he co-wrote with Don Mancini and John Lafia, and based on a story by Mancini. It is the first film in the Child's Play series and the first part to feature the character Chucky.

The movie stars Catherine Hicks and Chris Sarandon with Brad Dourif as Chucky. The plot follows a widowed mother who gives a doll to her son, not realizing the doll is possessed by the soul of a serial killer.

According to Rotten Tomatoes reviews, the movie received 73% of 51 critics surveyed giving the movie positive reviews.

Childs Play Movie Synopsis

Detective Mike Norris chases Charles Lee Ray, a wanted serial killer, through the streets of Chicago and into a toy store, after Ray is abandoned by his accomplice, Eddie Caputo.

Shot by Norris and dying, Ray performs a voodoo spell to transfer his soul into one of the Good Guy brand talking dolls. The store is hit by lightning and explodes, and Norris finds Ray's lifeless body next to the doll.

The six-year-old boy, Andy, of widow Karen Barclay, wanted a Good Guy doll for his birthday, but he couldn't afford one. He bought one at a discount from a street vendor and Andy was thrilled.

The doll calls himself "Chucky". That night, Karen's best friend Maggie, who is looking after Andy, is attacked by Chucky, causing her to fall from a window to her death. Norris suspects Andy as a suspect but he claims that it was Chucky and that Chucky told him his real name was "Charles Lee Ray".

The next day, Chucky makes Andy skip school and take the train downtown. He sneaks into Caputo's house and kills him by causing a gas explosion as revenge for Caputo's abandonment of him. Andy is once again considered a suspect and put into a mental hospital. At home, Karen discovers that the doll moves and talks without batteries.

Chucky suddenly comes to life and attacks her before running away. Karen goes to Norris but he doesn't trust her. She finds a street vendor for more information but is nearly attacked; Norris saves her and forces the vendor to admit that he stole the doll from the burning toy store where Norris killed Ray.

Although Norris is still skeptical, Karen tries to warn him that his turn will come after Caputo. Sure enough, Norris is attacked by Chucky. He shoots the doll, whose wounds suddenly bleed and cause pain. Chucky flees to his former voodoo instructor, John, demanding answers; John tells him that the longer his soul stays inside the doll, the more "humanized" the doll will become.

John refuses to help so Chucky tortures John with a voodoo statue, forcing him to reveal that in order to exit the doll's body, Chucky must transfer his soul to the first human to reveal his true identity: Andy. Chucky goes in search of Andy while Karen and Norris find a dying John. Before dying, John tells them that to kill Chucky, they must attack his heart.
