Trees of Historic Bethlehem: Getaway performs of artwork

For this year’s version of Trees of Historic Bethlehem, a small military of volunteers adorned two dozen Christmas trees, each individual based on a particular piece of artwork - a painting or bit of pottery, an aged map or quilts - identified during the Historic Bethlehem assortment.

It is no exaggeration to mention the trees are functions of artwork on their own. The Bethlehem Backyard garden Club embellished 21 artificial trees of various dimensions, such as eleven within the Kemerer Museum of Attractive Arts, 6 at Moravian Museum and 4 for the One Sisters Dwelling. Visitors to your 1810 Goundie House can see a few trimmed trees in the Winter season Vintage Industry by Marche Maison. The trees there evoke a snowy Bethlehem.

Museum curator Lindsey Jancay came up with all the notion for this year’s concept linking a chunk of artwork to every tree to spotlight the Historic Bethlehem artwork collection.

The trees are manifestations of creative imaginations however they also teach concerning the Moravians as well as the history of Bethlehem. Among the trees while in the Moravian Museum is connected to a lovely previous map of Moravia, the area in Europe from which the settlers of Bethlehem emigrated. Ornaments contain compact maps and also golden angels much like the kinds located in a very corner in the significant old map, which can be hanging a few ft absent.

The Star of Bethlehem tree from the Kemerer is decorated to mirror a chalk pastel drawing on the same title by artist Margaret Cantieni. It depicts a modernist see of your Bethlehem star that shines about the town from South Mountain.

“We imagined we might choose vintage,” says Sharon Donchez, chairwoman on the Backyard garden Club’s Xmas Decorations Committee. “We pictured ourselves standing with the Civic Centre and looking out at the Star of Bethlehem. When you observe, you see all these small properties going up the hillside.”

The decorators added compact ornaments of homes on the tree then re-created the angles while in the image with strings of lights slashing down the tree and back and forth “just like the angles over the painting,” Donchez says.

A white Christmas tree from the Kemerer is specially for kids, festooned with very small circus animals such as lions and tigers, an homage to some lithograph of Barnum & Bailey’s Circus.

The Backyard garden Club tapped its extensive selection of Christmas ornaments from years of decorating but also had to make other decorations and buy some to fit the themes.

The Bethlehem Steel tree at the Kemerer required a trip for some hardware to pair it with a drawing of your Steel plant. For other ornaments, the volunteers used pieces from an old Erector set, the kind small children build with.

The music room from the Moravian Museum has a tree with paper ornaments made of sheet music and an announcement for the Bach Choir of Bethlehem. A tree all decked out in silver ornaments sits near displays of silver and pewter plates and other dining ware.

“Moravians were very well known for the quality of your craftsmanship,” Jancay claims.

The Moravians also were progressive in supporting education for girls and women even back again in Colonial times, and they had a philosophy that combined compassion with not sweating the tiny stuff.

Unlike the Moravian Museum plus the Kemerer, the cavernous Solitary Sisters Household where solitary Moravian women once lived, is largely bare of artifacts, partly because the temperature and humidity can’t be controlled. But near among the list of 4 adorned trees is a sign with advice that speaks volumes: “In Essentials, Unity. In Non-Essentials, Liberty. In all things, Love.”

Visitors to your Trees of Historic Bethlehem can vote for their favorite tree - there’s a little box next to every tree. After the exhibit closes Jan. 13, Donchez and Sandy Gass, co-chairwoman on the Christmas Decorating Committee, will count the votes. Those who voted for the winner will have their names entered into a drawing for a gift basket.
